Protecting your home at Christmas
Over the busy Christmas period, we often fall victim to haphazard security, harsh Winter conditions and opportunist thieves who are eager to strike. As a result, we encourage you to follow our home protection guide – the only way into your property should be via the chimney!
1. Security
- Put your Christmas tree and presents in a sensible place which avoids leaving them on display to intruders.
- If you are ordering any online shopping, be alert when deliveries arrive for opportunists who may see your front door is open.
- Leave lights on or put them on timers so it appears your property is occupied when out.
- When everyone has unwrapped their presents, make sure the packaging for expensive items is hidden well in your recycling bins.
- Check your intruder alarm system is in working order and always activate it when you are heading out.
2. Decorations
- Make sure you turn off your Christmas tree lights and put out the candles when you are going out.
- Check that your smoke detectors are working properly and, if possible, integrate them into your intruder alarm system.
3. Social media
- If you are going away, even for a short time, avoid the temptation to announce this on social media as burglars can easily obtain information about you via these platforms.
- Remember to turn off your location settings.
4. Leaks
- Keep your heating on low to help prevent water pipes from bursting.
- Consider adding flood sensors to your alarm system, alerting you to any mishaps while you are away.
‘Tis the season to be jolly so don’t let your festive celebrations end in tears! In the meantime, our team will be happy to discuss your insurance requirements and to answer any queries you may have.
